Classic ‘to kapatid!"
"Yung una kasing Totoy Bato, boksing yun eh. Eto kasi mixed martial arts. Yung makakalaban ko dito iba-ibang nation."
"Make people happy" could very well be the driving force of people behind Nestlé Creamery, the ice cream hub that continues to stand witness to the creation of countless warm moments since it reopened in 2006. The ultimate ice cream haven located in front of the Nestlé Plant along Aurora Blvd. in Quezon City has succeeded in painting smiles on everyone’s faces, both young and not so young, as it continues to churn out heavenly delights.
Indeed, hearts can get warmer even in a freezing cold place. A visit to the newly-refurbished Nestlé Creamery proves it.
The new ice cream stopover was recently remodeled and given a new look, and the moment you walk through its door, you’ll feel excitement in the air. You’ll see it in the cheerful colors of the interiors, the factory-inspired look of the place, and the gigantic, colorful menu. If these are not enough, wait till you smell the heavenly scent of freshly-baked sugar cones wafting through the air.
In case you’re wondering, yes, this is the same place that became popular in the ’70s and ’80s. "People always approach us and say ‘Oh, we used to come here before,’" Michelle Chang-Co shared.
Michelle, with partners Joel Tuquid and Emerson Lim from Innovasian Ideas, Inc., the same company behind the success of Thumbs Up ice cream and the popular Orbitz Pearl Shakes, would like to relive these wonderful childhood memories. That’s why they immediately took the challenge of sprucing up the place when Nestlé Philippines gave them the offer. They were given three weeks to do it.
From the start, Michelle and her partners had a clear vision in mind: They wanted the happy faces of hordes of families enjoying their cold and hot treats. They wanted families to bond over its delicious ice cream and tasty comfort foods like spaghetti and fried chicken.
The Nestlé Creamery never runs out of various classic ice cream delights like cobblers and parfaits using the world-famous Nestlé ice cream as its base. These include the Old Fashioned Banana Split, the Classic Strawberry Sundae and the Simply Strawberry Parfait, the Peach Melba Split, the Melba Banana Split and Black and White.
Not to be missed are classic flavors like vanilla, chocolate, mocha, strawberry, mango and ube and premium flavors like Chunky Macapuno, Double Dutch, Cookies and Cream and Rocky Road.
"We offer an interactive atmosphere where customers are treated to a view of how their ice cream of choice is made," Michelle said.
Aside from classic favorites, Michelle and her partners also came up with ice cream servings good for three to four like the Bucket of Apples, apple ice cream served in a bucket with sugar cones; Tatlong Itlog, banana turon with caramel sauce and scoops of ice cream; and Tuxedo, vanilla Swiss roll with cookies and cream-flavored ice cream glazed with white and dark chocolate sauce.
Another addition to the fun factory is Marble Slab, a frozen slab of marble where ice cream delights are created in style. If you want to be daring, you can either pick your own ice cream flavors from the freezer and ask the waiters to mix them for you. You may also choose from its taste-tested Marble Slab Concoctions like the Vanilla Oaty Rum Caramel, the Piñata Crunch, the Vanilla Smarties Choco Fudge or the Vanilla Berry Cheesecake.
But the Nestlé Creamery is definitely more than just about ice cream; it also boasts of a selection of hot and tasty meals. Destined to become the ultimate place for family outings, the Nestlé Creamery also boasts of an indoor and outdoor playground for kids and ample, secured parking space. It offers cool packages for themed kiddie parties.
It is that time again. 2008 is almost over and there are less than four months to go till the holiday season. With the prospect of increased spending looming in the horizon, the courtship of consumers has also intensified. Earlier than usual, I must say, but these are hard times and additional revenue arriving early will help everybody. Of course, this also means great bargains, bonuses or all those other enticements the budget-conscious can take advantage of. Here now are three albums that offer a lot, must-haves for music lovers who want the best at a great price.
Chris Brown Exclusive The Forever Edition at P430. This is a repackaged edition of the hit album Chris Brown. It made Brown a star thanks to hit singles With You, Wall to Wall and Kiss Kiss featuring T-Pain. I have to admit this is something he should have done later. But like I said, times are hard and if this will mean more sales for the hip-hop heartthrob of the moment, let him have his way.
Brown should have included No Air, his sensational duet with American Idol Jordin Sparks but there are still new freebies for fans to enjoy. The Forever package has Brown’s three hits and the entire first album with Throwed, Take You Down, Picture Perfect feat. will.i.am, Hold Up feat. Big Boi, You, Damage, Help Me, I Wanna Be, Gimme Whatcha Got feat. Lil Wayne, I’ll Call Ya, Lottery and bonus tracks Nice feat. The Game and Down feat. Kanye West.
Newbies in Forever are the current hit single Forever, Superhuman feat. Keri Hilson, Heart Ain’t a Brain and the Picture Perfect Remix feat. Bow Wow and Hurricaine Chris. There is also a DVD available only in The Forever Edition. It is Chris Brown on Tour. Blurb says this is "a 30-minute look behind the scenes at the sold-out, upclose and personal tour of 2008." It also features a gallery of never-before-seen photos of Chris, of course.
The Best of Radiohead at P395. The legendary rock band made history with its decision to sell its latest album In Rainbows on-line at a price buyers think it is worth. That means you can pay a dollar and still get your copy. A lot of people said the guys were not right in the head and they would only lose money. That did not happen. Radiohead proved instead its marketing savvy has indeed mastered the computer age. In Rainbows became a big hit and because of the massive publicity generated by the on-line sales, there’s more interest in Radiohead than ever before. The two-CD set with 29 classic tracks comes out just in time. It is the album for loyal fans who can now listen to the hits in one album. It is also the album for new converts who want to learn more about the group without blowing their budgets on having to buy Radiohead’s seven CDs. Among the hits included are Karma Police, Creep, Paranoid Android, Fake Plastic Trees, I Might Be Wrong, No Surprises, Talk Show Host, The National Anthem, Just, High and Dry, My Iron Lung, There There, Lucky, Idioteque, 2+2=5 and True Love Waits.
Where the Light Is Live in Los Angeles by John Mayer for P395. It would have been nice if blue-eyed soul heartthrob Mayer had been one of those foreign acts who had been here to do shows. But since that has not happened yet, here is a wonderful CD through which we can get an idea about what we are still missing, plus live versions of his hits.
The two-CD set features a concert divided in three parts where Mayer also plays the guitar. It opens with an Acoustic Set, which has Neon, Stop this Train, In Your Atmosphere, Daughters and Free Fallin’. Next is the Trio Set where he performs with the John Mayer Trio and includes Everyday I Have the Blues, Wait Until Tomorrow, Who Did You Think I Was, Come When I Call, Good Love is on the Way, Out of My Mind, Vultures and Bold as Love.
To close he brings in his entire band for the Band Set in a most exciting finale with Waiting on the World to Change, Slow Dancing in a Burning Room, Why Georgia, The Heart of Life, I Don’t Need No Doctor, Gravity, I Don’t Trust Myself with Loving You, Belief and I’m Gonna Find Another You. Somebody should get this guy out here quick. He sounds fantastic.

Other awards in the short feature category are Special Jury Prize, My Pet by Anna Bigornia; Best Director, Mark Reyes for God Only Knows, which also won the Audience Choice Award; Special Jury Citation, Angan-Angan by Sheron Dayoc.

Sabi ko after (the movie) ITALY, isang bagsakang pahinga tapos shooting uli.
Could it be true that Willie Revillame has found a new love in the person of a simple CEU student, younger than Meryll Soriano (the eldest of Willie’s children) who hails from Bulacan? (Good for him, after all, hasn’t he been "complaining" on Wowowee that he goes home to a big, empty, lonely house which has everything except a "queen"?)
Could it be true that he has already drawn a "last will," with all his love children well provided for? (Willie has a country house in Batangas, a few more in various Metro Manila locations - with the one in Ayala Heights in Alabang said to be now in Meryll’s name - and a yacht.)
Could it be true that he’s buying a building somewhere in the Timog-Morato area in Quezon City, worth P80 million?
Those were the questions Willie left hanging when he and his entourage left for the US for the staging of Wowowee last Saturday, July 12, at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall, produced by Calla Lily Productions.
Unfortunately, Funfare’s Big Apple correspondent Edmund Silvestre (of The Filipino Reporter) wasn’t able to ask Willie those questions during the presscon in Atlantic City, mainly because Willie was "MIA" (know what it means?). (But promise, I will ask Willie as soon as he comes home maybe today.)
Here’s Edmund’s report:
With Wowowee saddled lately by controversies, one of which led to the firing of one of its hosts, Precious Lara Quigaman, for bringing her boyfriend and mother to a Wowowee show abroad, the female hosts were "well-behaved" for the latest overseas staging of ABS-CBN’s top-rated game show, this time at the Boardwalk Hall (former home of the Miss America Pageant) in Atlantic City, New Jersey (the Las Vegas of the East Coast).
Meaning, no one among Willie’s co-hosts Mariel Rodriguez and Valerie Concepcion, and guest hosts Kristine Hermosa, Angelica Panganiban and Roxanne Guinoo, as well as the sultry dance trio of Milagring, Luningning and Mariposa, brought along a boyfriend.
"Wala, kasi wala naman kaming boyfriend lahat," the girls replied almost in chorus when asked if anyone had a boyfriend who tagged along.
"Ako siguradong wala talaga," said the ever lovely Kristine whose separation from actor Diether Ocampo was a big story not long ago.
Mariel, who is reportedly dating actor-model Zanjoe Marudo, could only smile and nod to imply that she too was "well-behaved" in this trip.
A Wowowee staffer said the stars had been reminded to refrain from doing something that might put them in hot water, although they all denied that there was a specific instruction, especially from Willie.
"No, there was no instruction whatsoever," said Valerie.
A serious Roxanne said there’s no need to remind them of what to do.
"Pag trabaho, trabaho lang talaga," she said. "’Yun lang din naman ang gusto ni Willie, focus lang sa work so we can give our best."
She added with a smile, "At wala kaming mga boyfriend."
It’s not a secret that Roxanne recently ended her relationship with hunky boyfriend Jake Cuenca, who is now being linked to Bea Alonzo.
Angelica looked sad so it must be true that she and Derek Ramsay have broken up (something which Derek has denied).
The stars were smart parrying sensitive questions from the media and instead talked about their craft and how they wanted to grow as actresses. Moreover, they expressed hope to see the day when the talents of ABS-CBN can cross over to work with the rival GMA 7 and vice versa.
"What if joint forces lahat, ideas and talents of ABS-CBN and GMA 7, lahat magkakasama to bring the entertainment industry in the Philippines to a new level," said Roxanne. "Can you imagine kung walang network war? This could lead to other positive changes."
Roxanne lauded Regal Film’s Lily Monteverde for doing what seemed to be impossible before, i.e., bringing together Kapuso and Kapamilya artists in one movie. She said if Mother Lily can do it, why can’t the two giant networks? Perhaps Roxanne’s wishes will be fulfilled when the debut film of KC Concepcion (a Kapamilya) opposite Richard Gutierrez (a Kapuso) comes to fruition.
Meanwhile, Willie was MIA (Missing In Action) during the presscon. Also missing was co-host Pokwang who is now a big name among Pinoys in the US East Coast.
"Saan ba si Pokwang," reporters kept asking. "Saan si Willie?"
Wowowee people said Willie couldn’t make it because he was exhausted from the trip, but it was not clear where Pokwang was.
"Hindi kaya magkasama ‘yung dalawa?" one reporter joked.
No, hindi po kumulog at kumidlat sa Atlantic City. Hehehehe!
Turn heartaches into monster hits. That’s Ogie Alcasid’s biggest contribution to humanity’s fight against global warming. Believe me his songs can make flowers bloom!
"It’s a force that evokes so many emotions. It’s so easy to draw from it when I’m writing songs. Heartache sells more than falling in love. It’s like a wickedly bitter coffee that’s so devilishly delicious when you sip it first thing in the morning when you wake up," Ogie enthuses.
Ogie is the friend everyone wants to have. He is gentle, proper, funny; he also prefers to have sex with lights on. No, he doesn’t want to be taller. He’s tall, just smaller than Kobe Bryant. Everything about Ogie is big. "Small brother" is a misnomer to someone who has gigantic presence and charisma. Ogie proved that the ordinary can be extraordinary with tenacity, hard work, focus and a burning desire to be the best. And a huge talent that he nurtures with love and respect for his public. "I do think about my public when I write my songs. I will never write anything that is vulgar or demeaning and derogatory."
"Songwriting for me is like painting to a painter. I will start something and if I can’t feel the flow, I will discard it and continue writing another day. If the creative juice gets going then I finish a song in one sitting."
Try listening to Ogie’s songs and you will hear him tell a story that is so familiar because very often it is your story. Then you become friends because he articulates what your heart wants to say. His musical discourse is so Pinoy; his songs are the anthems of friends, neighbors, and countrymen who are battered by storms, jilted by lovers, violated by satanic fuel prices, broken by unfulfilled promises - but hopeful, always hopeful.
His songs both warm and rend the heart. They’re honest, surprising and fun.
Asked about his Top 5 all-time favorite songs that he composed, he wrote the following:
1. Kailangan Kita - It is sweet and loving. A very personal song that is close to my heart.
2. Ikaw Ang Aking Pangarap - My song for Regine.
3. Wag Ka Lang Mawawala - A song that reminds me of the inner turmoil I had during a very difficult time in my life.
4. Panginoon - My personal prayer to our Heavenly Father.
5. I Will Be Here - My song to my children.
Look at his choices carefully. You wouldn’t miss how personal he is with his musical poetry. They chronicle his journey. They capture his story so eloquently and somewhere in his songs, he tells every man’s story. And you are comforted or inspired because your words are his, his words are yours.
He says love is God without being messianic. And if Regine Velasquez were a flower, she would be sampaguita, very simple, fragrant and humble. And if he were an animal, he would be a dog because he would be man’s best friend.
Ogie’s odyssey hasn’t always been easy. He barged into the music industry armed with enormous talent and unwavering faith that a dream was going to come true. He’s always wanted to be a singer/composer. Amidst rough sailing, he stuck to his guns, fired them without hesitation when necessity called for it -survived and hallelujah, made it.
He took risks both personally and professionally. When music genres changed quicker than a blink, he continued to write songs of the heart. When the airwaves were dominated by angst, angry music, he stuck to his stories of love. He remained gentle amidst belligerent Trojan warriors, never doubting, never hesitating, never trembling.
Ogie always knew the core of his music. And this is his fundamental strength.
On the personal side, like all of us, he loved, lost, cried, laughed, stumbled. He came out wounded, scarred, broken and alive - humbled, happy, wiser and sexier. And yes, Ogie is sexy. (Go ask Regine!).
Ogie is a better man because of his music. His music is better because he is a better man.
He loves to talk about his music. "The hardest piece I wrote was the music for the animation movie, Urduja. The easiest would be Kailangan Kita. It just flowed. Some of the songs that I wrote in a lonely state of mind would be Wag Ka Lang Mawawala, Kahit Na Malayo Ka, Kung Mawawala Ka, Bakit Ngayon Ka Lang, Ikaw Sana. Some of the songs I wrote in my happy state would be, Pangarap Ko Ang Ibigin Ka, Mahal Kita Walang Iba, Kailangan Kita and Ikaw Ang Aking Pangarap."
What about fame which can be toxic? What has it done to him? "It has humbled me. I feel indebted to every person that has had the experience of watching my shows or buying my music."
On Regine’s birthday last April, Ogie wrote her a love letter. He continues to be a devoted father to his lovely kids. Last night of the world, who do you want to spend it with? I asked him. "My loved ones. Kahit si Scarlett Johansson na rin."
If you were a song, what would you be? I whispered. "I’m Handog by Florante. Tatanda at lilipas din ako, ngunit may awitin…."
And I say, Bravo Ogie and thank you.
Last question, does size matter? Or should I be asking Ogie this question? I think I should reserve this for someone small.
LOS ANGELES - Al Reynolds continues to have a soft spot for Star Jones, despite their impending divorce.
"I still very much love her," Reynolds told The Associated Press on Monday. "I do. I can’t lie to you."
Jones’ soon-to-be ex-husband is opening up about his relationship with the former co-host of ABC’s "The View" in an interview being posted Tuesday on YouTube.
"I was approached by a number of media outlets to do interviews, and most of them wanted me to trash my wife," Reynolds told the AP during a telephone interview Monday. "I wasn’t interested in participating in the sensationalism."
Instead, the interview was filmed last month at the home of Reynolds’ publicist, Howard Bragman. Jones filed for divorce from Reynolds in March after three years of marriage.
Reynolds said his marriage to Jones began to unravel last year when Jones was launching her truTV talk show and Reynolds began teaching at Florida Memorial University in Miami. He said the pair separated in February, and he was served divorce papers in March. Reynolds was surprised when Jones issued a public statement about the dissolution of their marriage in April.
"I don’t know if I can point to a specific thing that happened," said Reynolds. "I felt like we started to grow apart. I took a position down in Florida. I started working aggressively on my book. She was trying to get her show off the ground. We were also trying to deal with all the negative stuff after we allowed the media into our marriage."
Reynolds, who now divides his time between New York and Miami, said he’s not gay, and the Internet and tabloid speculation about his sexuality — several bloggers refer to him as "Big Gay Al" — has damaged his professional reputation. The 37-year-old former banker said he has not dated anyone since the end of his relationship with Jones, nor has he spoken to the former prosecutor.
"I feel like I’ve still got a little bit of healing to do," said Reynolds. "I’m not sure I could open that emotional side of myself up to anyone else right now. After the divorce is final, I’ll probably be a little bit more interested in that. Right now, I’m focusing on teaching and finishing my doctorate degree."
Jones and Reynolds tied the knot in an over-the-top ceremony in November 2004. Jones was criticized for endlessly discussing the wedding and plugging its sponsors on "The View." The negative reaction to the affair, which was attended by guests ranging from Hillary Rodham Clinton to Spike Lee, was cited by Barbara Walters as a reason why Jones’ contract wasn’t renewed in 2006.
Reynolds — who is originally from Horse Pasture, Va. — now agrees the wedding spun out of control but claims he thought such behavior was customary for celebrity nuptials. Reynolds is currently working on a financial help book aimed at the middle-to-low class, and tentatively titled "Bank On It." He says he’s not interested in using the divorce as opportunity to fade out of the spotlight.
"I’m not a fade-away type of guy," said Reynolds. "I’m a guy who progresses and moves forward. I was successful before I met Star, and I plan to be successful after Star. I’m in the public eye now. That’s the truth. It comes with responsibilities. I’m using it as an opportunity to educate and motivate people."
Wake-upper: Congratulations to Ricky Davao for winning the Best Supporting Actor award at the just-concluded The International Filmmaker Festival in the UK, for Signos which bagged the Bronze for Best Foreign Film. Signos was directed by Aloy Adlawan.

Like giving birth to a first child.
That’s how Bibeth Orteza describes the writing of Dolphy’s biography, titled Hindi Ko Itong Narating Mag-Isa, which will be launched en grande at the NBC Tent at The Fort sometime next week. The invitation is also in behalf of the Dolphy Aid Para sa Pinoy Foundation which provides education for the underprivileged.
"The book was conceptualized as early as four years ago," said Eric Quizon, one of Dolphy’s 18 children by six (I hope I got the number right) women, none of whom he married. "It’s our gift to Daddy on his 80th birthday (July 25)."
The tell-all book leaves no stone unturned. Except for one who’s deceased and Alma Moreno who gave Bibeth and company a runaround, all the women Dolphy has loved before were interviewed - including Lotis Key, now married to a basketball player and living in the States; Pilar Pilapil, now married to a pastor; and his current love, Zsa Zsa Padilla - and also all his children (except Freddie, deceased).
You wonder, does Dolphy clear the "bombilya" matter that has enhanced his macho image?
"Find out in the book," Eric teased.
Aiko wins PPO vs Martin
Henceforth, Martin Jickain can’t be within 1,000 meters away from his estranged wife, Quezon City Councilor Aiko Melendez, who got the nod of a QC court on her petition for a PPO (Permanernt Protection Order).
"But I’m not denying him his visitation rights to our daughter Marthena," clarified Aiko who, like Martin, has beautifully moved on after their headline-making break-up last year. Aiko is said to be "sweet" with Bulacan, Bulacan, Vice Mayor Patrick Meneses while Martin has also found a new love.
Briefly noted
* The English-Filipino band Firefalldown - composed of Jon Blaylock (vocalist, guitar), Andrew Hodgson (drums) and Joel Sablayan (bass) - emerged among the regional semi-finalists in the Surface Unsigned Festival, the only live-music event that attracts unsigned bands to the attention of the UK music industry, with more than 4,000 bands from southern England competing this year. Formed in UK a year ago, Firefalldown will release a single this month to pave the way for their forthcoming Metro Manila tour.
* American actor Soren Fulton (photo) is arriving on July 21 to help drum up for the projects of the American Leprosy Mission (ALM), accompanied by ALM president Christopher Doyle. Now 17, Fulton has been donating money to ALM since he was nine. He will visit the ALM and PLM (Philippine Leprosy Mission) in Cebu.
